Brussels slams brake on fuel subsidies

I read an article in the Sunday Times, “Brussels Slams Brake on Fuel Subsidies”, with much concern recently.

Whilst I do not agree with localised fuel subsidies, particularly if they are targeted at marginal seats, which Nick Clegg seems to deny in the article, I am troubled about how the UK has got itself into a position that we have given up our rights to make such decisions without reference to a foreign power.

We have a long and successfully proven democratic process in the UK, via our opposition politics tradition, which provides a route to effectively scrutinise and expose any potential vote fixing behaviour. This coupled with a free press provides the checks and balances we need and are used to.

We urgently need to attempt to negotiate a radically different arrangement with Brussels, and to then trust the British people’s good judgement at a referendum on EU membership. Only then can we begin the process of building a form of cooperation amongst European peoples that actually serves and is accountable to the peoples of Europe.
